ECOFIN selects portfolio managers for its clients using PMDB-Online, its comprehensive portfolio manager database.
Experience
ECOFIN has many years of experience in selecting portfolio managers. Since the beginning of the 1990s it has been selecting domestic and foreign specialists for its clients in a broad range of investment classes. To date, ECOFIN has placed asset management mandates worth more than CHF 20 billion for pension funds, foundations, trusts and family offices.
Independence
ECOFIN does not have any links with asset managers and can thus guarantee its clients complete independence. Nor does it manage any assets; instead it focuses on providing investment advice in respect of its mandates.
Competition
A large number of portfolio managers are considered in each selection, thereby creating the necessary conditions for competition. ECOFIN’s contact database currently contains details of more than 200 leading domestic and foreign asset managers, who are all contacted.
Structured selection process
Portfolio managers are selected in a structured selection process. This ensures that clients and portfolio managers are treated equally. ECOFIN can conduct the entire process. However, the client may conduct individual parts of the process as desired.
- Mandate specification
- Specification of mandate with the client, specification of investment target, investment universe, benchmark, investment guidelines, etc.
- Call for tenders
- Invitation to portfolio managers to participate in the selection, evaluation of candidates and preparation of a shortlist of the best-placed managers. In this part we use PMDB-Online, our portfolio manager database.
- Due diligence
- Detailed analysis and assessment of short listed candidates (due diligence), preparation of an evaluation document for the client’s attention, round of presentations by best candidates and assistance of the client in reaching the final decision.
- Contract negotiations
- Examination of new contract and monitoring of portfolio composition (transition management).
